Certification

Key objectives of the NIMMO® Educational Foundation include standardization of and education in the application of NIMMOCARE®. To ensure a high standard of quality, all NIMMOCARE® Practitioners are certified exclusively by the NIMMO® Educational Foundation. To achieve certification, every doctor is required to complete a specially designed curriculum and to pass an examination. This course work is in addition to the basic Doctor of Chiropractic program. In order to maintain certification, practitioners must also meet continuing education requirements.

The materials and requirements of the Certified NIMMOCARE® Practitioner curriculum were designed by Dr. Jeffrey Cohen. Dr. Cohen was certified as a NIMMOCARE® Instructor in 1978 by Dr. Raymond Nimmo. Since then he has taught countless postgraduate seminars for Chiropractors around the United States. He has been an Adjunct Assistant Professor at NYCC for 10 years, where he teaches a NIMMOCARE® course to chiropractic students.

How it Works

Is non-invasive pain relief treatment that’s based on simple scientific concepts. It offers freedom from the physical, emotional, and financial impact of chronic pain. NIMMOCARE® goes beyond the treatment of symptoms to eliminate the cause of pain, promoting healing and preventing recurrence.

The Problem: A Cycle of Pain

  1. Trauma — Chronic pain can begin with a major injury or small harmful motions repeated over time.
  2. Protective Reaction — To prevent further injury, the body responds with a protective measure. The nervous system sends an impulse to the muscles around the area of injury, causing them to tighten. The muscles that tighten create a network of tension sites called trigger points.
  3. Repetition — These protective impulses are helpful while the injury heals, but the body learns through repetition. The nervous system does not sense healing and continues to send protective impulses, causing unnecessary muscle tension.
  4. Chronic Discomfort — This constant tightening creates a cycle of pain that will remain until the protective impulses are interrupted.

Our Solution:

Isolate the Pain — Finding the source of chronic pain requires expert knowledge of the:

  • Muscle System
  • Nervous System
  • Skeletal System

Doctors understand the complex relationships between these systems, and this enables them to target the source of pain.

  1. Apply Specific Pressure — Once they have been located, trigger points can be relieved through the application of precise amounts of pressure. NIMMOCARE® practitioners interrupt the body’s protective impulses to allow muscles to relax, thus restoring normal joint function.
  2. Break the Cycle — One by one, the network of pain-causing trigger points is resolved and muscles are allowed to relax. This creates relief from pain and prevents future injury.
  3. Design a Program of Recovery — NIMMOCARE® sets the muscular, nervous, and skeletal systems in balance. NIMMOCARE® doctors go beyond pain relief by providing follow-up treatment and recommending lifestyle choices that prevent future injury.

NOT JUST ANOTHER TRIGGER POINT OR DEEP TISSUE TECHNIQUE.

This sophisticated understanding of pain mechanisms leads to a unique method of treatment. Because we view the Trigger Point as part of a network of “short circuits” throughout the Nervous system we do not attempt to inject or massage out one major trigger point which seems to be causing the pain. Instead, we apply very specific, brief pressure (5 – 7 seconds) the Primary Trigger Point as well as to every secondary Trigger Point which is involved in this complex network. This can lead to treatment at sites which seem very remote from where the patient perceives the problem.

IN ORDER TO ACCOMPLISH THIS THE DR. MUST HAVE AN ULTRA REFINED KNOWLEDGE OF THE NEUROMUSCULAR SYSTEM AS WELL AS AN EXTREMELY WELL DEVELOPED PALPATORY ABILITY (sense of touch required to feel the secondary Trigger Points).

Living with Pain

Initiated a radical paradigm shift in chiropractic treatment with the development of manual trigger point therapy. The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapies has documented that 40% of Chiropractors in the United States apply the  Technique in their treatments. This number, determined by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners, reflects a high level of interest and the need for education and standardization of the Nimmo Technique. The  Educational Foundation is striving to create a common curriculum and standards of care to ensure that every  patient receives reliable and effective treatment.

The Answer to a Crisis

Up to 85 % of patients with low back pain are left without a definite diagnosis. If patients are confused, they are not alone.
Scientific American

You can tell how old a person is from an X-ray, but you can’t tell if they have pain, let alone where the pain is coming from.
American Back Society Newsletter

In 2005 Americans spent $85.9 billion looking for relief from back and neck pain through surgery, doctor’s visits, X-rays, MRI scans and medications, up from $52.1 billion in 1997.
The Journal of the American Medical Association

More than 650,000 arthroscopic knee surgeries are performed per year at a cost of $5,000 each. This study showed the efficacy of arthroscopy is no greater than that of placebo. The billions of dollars spent on such procedures spent annually might be put to better use.
— The New England Journal of Medicine

The need for change in the treatment of pain has never been so urgent. created a clear alternative to the expensive, invasive procedures that are pervasive in American health care systems and add to the burden of those afflicted with chronic pain.

The benefit of is clear. It’s a safe, noninvasive, inexpensive pain solution that works. But due to long-standing belief systems and resistance to change, spreading awareness isn’t so easy.

Dr. Nimmo’s concepts are as relevant today as they were in 1957:

First, one must have a free and open mind and not fear change.

The American health care system is in dire need of reform. represents an alternative to traditional treatment techniques.

For honest research one must keep his practice free from economic pressure.

Educational Foundation is a not-for-profit organization, allowing it the freedom to conduct new research and advance an alternative to conventional pain treatment.

Overcome the tendency in human nature to overlook a simple principle.

Is easy on the patient both physically and economically, and the science behind the technique is clear and proven.

I realized what every patient can understand, but many chiropractors seemingly cannot; that no bone can move unless a muscle moves it. And no muscle moves a bone unless a nerve impulse reaches it.

You cannot X-Ray pain.

The mission of the  Educational Foundation is to improve quality of life for patients by freeing them from the physical, emotional, and financial impact of chronic pain. treats the source of pain through non-invasive treatment. In the words of

Medicine is high tech, low touch.  is high touch, low tech.

In Receptor-Tonus (his technique), we strive to teach nothing that does not have a physiological basis.

The science behind  is sound, and The Educational Foundation is committed to continuing clinical research to further document its effectiveness.

Certified Doctors

Practitioners can be considered gatekeepers when it comes to chronic pain treatment. The approach is truly multidisciplinary, and certified doctors maintain relationships with a wide array of health care professionals. If your NIMMOCARE® doctor determines that you need to consult another health care provider, he/she will make the appropriate referral. He/she will also maintain contact with you throughout the course of your treatment to ensure you receive the most effective pain relief possible.

Goals

The Nimmocare technique is backed by sound science and was founded on Dr. Nimmo’s commitment “to teach nothing that does not have a physiological basis.” It not only works, it is scientifically sound. The concepts developed 50 years ago by are nearly identical to the model emerging in today’s medical literature for treating and explaining the mechanisms of chronic pain.

A key objective of the  is to compile experimental evidence documenting the effectiveness of NIMMOCARE®. New York Chiropractic College has joined forces with the Foundation, extending its research facilities to achieve this goal. This gives the Foundation access to sophisticated equipment and advice from scientists who are experienced in structuring and evaluating clinical studies. The evidence compiled has been and will continue to be published in peer-reviewed professional journals to spread awareness of the NIMMOCARE® technique. This information also make the case for widespread insurance coverage for NIMMOCARE® treatment.

Research is currently being conducted by Dr. Jeffrey Cohen with assistance from NYCC. (Joining a few elite teaching and research institutions dedicated to unearthing mechanisms by which chronic pain develops, leading to more effective methods for managing it.)
